Lall honored by American Society of Mechanical Engineers Mechanics Award

Pradeep Lall, Thomas Walter professor in Auburn University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and director of the NSF Center for Advanced Vehicle Electronics, was honored for his contributions to electronics packaging, reliability and prognostics research with the applied mechanics award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Electronic and Photonic Packaging Division.

Lall was recognized for his research on finding methods to make electronics systems safer, more reliable, energy efficient and survivable in harsh conditions. His work includes the development of dynamic models for electronic assemblies and products subjected to mechanical shock and accidental drop, as well as prognostics to identify impending electronic failures based on leading indicators. His work in these areas has had a profound impact on product design and development.

Lall has been a member of the Auburn faculty since 2002. He is the recipient of the 2012-2013 SEC Auburn University Faculty Achievement Award, as well as a College of Engineering Senior Faculty Research Award. He has received three Motorola Outstanding Innovation Awards, five Motorola Engineering Awards and 20 best paper awards at national and international conferences.

 Lall is a fellow of ASME and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, holds three U.S. patents and serves as associate editor for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Transactions on Components and Packaging Technologies, as well as the ASME Journal of Electronic Packaging. He has written two books, 13 book chapters and more than 350 journal and conference papers.

Lall is the founding faculty adviser for the Surface Mounts Technology Association (SMTA) student chapter at Auburn and is a member of the editorial advisory board for the SMTA journal. He earned the master’s and doctoral degree from the University of Maryland and a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
